I have an aquantinence who is works at a restaurant I service.  She's Mexican ( I assume) and her english is pretty good.  I have only a passing familiarity with her mother tongue, but I try to talk to her in what little Spanish I know.  She's always delighted to try and help me learn to say a few things now and then, and the thought occured to me yesterday that I should ask her if she would be willing to tutor my son ( and maybe even my wife and me).

Has anyone here ever done something like that?  I'm sure there must be some curricula out there for DIY language lessons tailored to people who aren't professional teachers but who speak a language fluently.  I'm hoping that someone here has some advice, as google is not helping me so much in this quest.  I would really like for my son to have the opportunity to learn a second language while he's still young, and I would like the opportunity to learn Spanish as well.

That sounds like a neat idea!  I bet your conversational skills would be much better than a student at a "school."

I took Spanish from middler school through college.  My grammar and writing skills are excellent, but my conversational skills probably wouldn't be too good because I don't get much practice.

I don't know how good she would be in teaching grammar, but I'm sure there are tons of books (although I can recommend specific) that can help you in that area.  IMO, Spanish is easy because it is so logical and there aren't too many exceptions to the rule.

I've heard Rosetta Stone DVD's were excellent for learning a language very quickly if you were considering supplementing.

I bet your son will pick it up very quickly and you learning with him will add to the fun, especially since you and he could have this "special" shared language.
